One accepted world-view of industrial societies is that science, technology and material progress will take care of everything and make us happy. While rational thinking has undoubtedly brought many benefits to humanity, it has also created many new problems - the wholesale destruction of forests, pollution of air and water, extinction of species, overpopulation and global warming - all of which ultimately threaten our very existence.
